IIT and whopping salaries; IIT Salary; Highest paid IITian

In India, every student aspires about the brand name ‘Indian Institute of Technology'(IIT) on his/her degree. IITs are famous for their highly motivated and well organized academic environment. Many parents dream that their child will go to study at an IIT and thereafter be a great success. IITs and success are viewed as synonymous.

The main aim of IITs is not only to prepare engineers comparable to the best in the world but also to lead our country into world of innovation in Science and Technology. It was Jawaharlal Nehru, our first Prime Minister, through the IITs…had hoped to create a highly educated technological force that would provide vital inputs for the massive dams, power plants and industrial ventures he wanted to build. It would help ensure that the country was self-reliant in the realm of science and technology.

The idea of the IITs took shape in 1946, when a 22-member official committee headed by N.R. Sarkar submitted a report on the development of higher technical institutions to the government. The Sarkar Committee recommended the creation of four higher technical institutions of international standard, one each in the north, south, east and west, modeled possibly along the lines of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In May 1950, the first in the series was established in Kharagpur at the site of the Hijli Detention Camp, where the British had incarcerated political prisoners; the institution was named the “Indian Institute of Technology” before its formal inauguration on August 18, 1951.

Five IITs were established during the period 1950 to 1963. The IITs were established with aid from abroad. UNESCO assisted with the IIT at Kharagpur; Russia contributed to the one in Mumbai. There was input from Germany in Chennai. IIT Kanpur benefited from substantial presence from the United States and the IIT in Delhi was aided by the UK. Part of the aid package was for training faculty in educational institutions in the aid giving countries.

There are 11 more added to this list which are as follows:
Guwahati (1994), Roorkee (1847; as IIT 2001), Ropar (2008), Bhubaneswar (2008), Gandhinagar (2008), Hyderabad (2008), Patna (2008), Jodhpur (2008), Mandi (2009) and Indore (2009). Apart from these ITBHU Varanasi is also slated for conversion as IIT Varanasi.

The reason why everyone dreams to join these institutions is because of the fact that the kind of salary these drop-outs get. The coaching which the faculty offer, is also something that cannot be ruled out. Recently Facebook, a company which is famous for its social networking site had offered one of IIT Kharagpur drop-out a whopping sum of 70 lacs per aunum. There was one more guy from IIT Madras who walked with a 38 lacs CTC.

Now, we have to understand how can a guy earn such a huge amount what is the nature of output that is being given. Well, the demand with the advent of technology has the answer. Imagine designing an application that can translate any language of your choice through your mobile phone on a real time, or driving a car without any manual intervention and getting it parked in the parking bay, there are various such instances.

The IIT guys are capable of designing and fabricating these kind of technological marvels. Imagine how much one has to conceptualize, brain storm to bring out these sort of amazing designs. No wonder IIT will defnetily continue to produce quality engineers.
